            Strathmore is a very likeable town located along the Trans-Canada Highway in Southern Alberta, Canada. It falls in Wheatland County and is nearly 50 kilometres (30 miles approximately) east of Calgary city. The population of Strathmore town has been steadily rising. With this rise in the number of residents, Strathmore real estate demand and Strathmore new homes for sale have also seen a rise.

 

Population of Strathmore


            The town of Strathmore has a population of over 13,000 people living in a little over 5,000 private dwelling units. Strathmore is amongst the largest towns in the province. It is eligible for the status of a city. As per Alberta’s Municipal Government Act, upon reaching a number of 10,000 residents, a town becomes eligible for a city status.

 

History of Strathmore


            In 1883, Strathmore town came up as a hamlet for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) lines. The town was named by the Canadian Pacific Railway after one of its benefactors, namely, Claude Bowes-Lyon, the Earl of Strathmore. Queen Elizabeth, the Earl’s granddaughter later passed through the community in the Royal Train in May 1939 as consort to King George VI.

 

Track laying record by Strathmore


            Strathmore was witness to a track laying record being made when the railroad between Strathmore and Cheadle was built. One mile (1.6 km.) of steel was laid in one hour and at the close of the ten-hour working day, rails running 9 miles (14 km.) upto Cheadle had been laid to make a record in track-laying. This was no small achievement at that time.

 

Development of Strathmore


Canadian government’s efforts towards developing western Canada led to a rise in the population of Strathmore as it simultaneously also gained importance as a rail supply stop.    The Hamlet of Strathmore was moved 4 miles (6.4 km.) north to the current location by the Canadian Pacific Railway in the year 1905. Strathmore’s first school opened in 1908. Due to subdivision of land, the Canadian Pacific Railway’s railroad tracks are no more around. The Town of Strathmore celebrated its centennial in the year 2011.

 

The Economy of Strathmore       

    

            As on date, Strathmore town is a growing agricultural community. Interests in oil and gas exploration are also growing at Strathmore. The town is the headquarters of Golden Hills School Division No. 75.

 

            Strathmore has seen a steady commercial growth in the last few years. Many residents of Strathmore commute daily from the town to Calgary for work. Many franchise restaurants and big-box chain stores have also opened smart outlets at Strathmore. This has indeed been seen as a welcome development for the real estate sector where Strathmore real estate listings have seen a jump.             As part of the Golden Hills School Division, Strathmore can proudly boast of the undernoted educational institutions:

  • Three elementary schools, namely, Wheatland, Westmount and Brentwood;
  • A junior high school, namely, Crowther Memorial Junior High School;
  • A high school by the name of Strathmore High School;
  • A Catholic School with Kindergarten till grade 6, namely, Sacred Heart Academy and
  • A grade 7 to 12 Catholic School by the name of Holy Cross Collegiate.

            Trinity Christian Academy, a Christian school with Kindergarten to grade 9 is a publicly funded institution which opened at Strathmore in September 2008 at the former Convenant Bible College property, which had to be closed down for reasons like dropping student enrollment and other financial issues.

Originally founded as a supply stop for the Canadian Pacific Rail, Strathmore has seen a significant increase in the agricultural and oil industries during the past few decades.

 

There are a number of things for visitors to Strathmore to do: check out a hockey game at the Strathmore Family Centre, go for a swim at the aquatic centre, play a round at one of the golf courses or check out the scenery at one of the many parks. For an experience not often found in Alberta, visit the Fieldstone Winery, located just 10km (6.5mi) out of the town limits.

 

During the August long weekend, the town of Strathmore celebrates in the western-themed Strathmore Heritage Days and Stampede, which features rodeos, entertainment and a midway.

Economy

Today, the town is an important agricultural community. Oil and gas exploration is also a growing interest in the area. It is the headquarters of Golden Hills School Division No. 75.
